Mariah Carey, the pop sensation who made her debut as a recording artist in 1990 under Columbia Pictures, is rated amongst the top female vocalists world over. She has had several top selling singles and albums and featured in films as well as produced and written music for other artists. Beyonce Knowels says she drew inspiration from Carey’s vocal style and songs to make her own singing debut. Several critics point out that a large part of the pop music culture in the US and teen music sensations remain influenced by Mariah. Several seasons of American Idolsaw imitations of Mariah Carey’s style.
- The 1994 single ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ from the album "Merry Christmas” remains one of the top holiday songs and was the biggest single in Japan that year. It was popular on all radio stations in the US. It successfully mixed pop into the Christmas genre to give it a fun flavour and instantly struck a chord with young listeners and pop music lovers.
- "Fantasy", September 12, 1995 album, Daydreamsuccessfully used a hook from Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love and captured listeners with its theme of a love stuck woman fantasising about an impossible relationship.
- The 1996 single ‘One Sweet Day’ featured Boyz II Men and is one of the duets that became a style for Mariah. It held the number one spot for several weeks. It was labelled a standout track from the album Daydream and is written on the touching theme of loosing ones dear ones and then seeing them again in heaven. It became a song for public mourning of popular celebrities like Princess Diana at whose funeral the song was performed.
- After remaining unsuccessful for several years, in 2009, Carey's song Obsessed became her 12th Platinum single, the highest by any female artist. Carey described the song as representing a ‘fun summer moment.’ Critics took the song as proof that Carey ‘still got it’ and it was commended for the laid- back style coupled with catchy lyrics.
- "Honey," from the album Butterfly was released as the lead single from the album on August 26, 1997 and instantly became popular.
